Private Registration for Domain Names

Domain Names with Public Information
As per Registry & ICANN policies, most domain names that are registered must have contact details publicly available for that domain so that the owner may be reached if necessary. The contact details are stored in a 'WHOIS' database and WHOIS information for all domains can be found online using a number of WHOIS search websites. (for example: Whois Domain Name Lookup - Search Database | Crazy Domains AU)
Information such as the Registrants full name, postal address, e-mail address, phone number, and so on, are usually listed publicly in the WHOIS database for anyone from the public to access.
Making your domain information public on WHOIS is advantageous at some point like when you are trying to sell the domain. However, public domain information could also mean placing your details vulnerable to attacks from hackers, spammers and identity thieves. Most of the time you will find your email and phone being inundated with companies trying to sell your web design or similar services for your domain name. They retrieved this information from your public information on a WHOIS search.
What Does Private Registration Do?
This is where our Private Registration product & service kicks in, which automatically hides the Registrant & contact details on a WHOIS search and so helps domain owners from experiencing the disadvantages of public registration. With the contact details hidden, spammers and advertising agencies can't find your details and so it cuts out all email and phone spam entirely! Please note that some registry policies do not allow any privatisation of some or all contacts for their domain names.
Why Is Private Registration Important?
Here are the reasons why you need to consider adding Private Registration to all your domain names.
- Identity Theft. There have been cases where identity thieves find personal data through the WHOIS database and subsequently create additional domain names and email addresses in the original domain owner’s name. This is done for the purpose of stealing the original login credentials to the website, thereby resulting in the theft of the domain name and website you have dedicated your time and hard work to.
- Spammers. When your personal information is placed in the hands of spammers, your inbox will be flooded with email containing links to both phishing sites as well as sites containing malware. The result is a computer virus or obtaining your credit card details (they already have your name, address and phone number).
- Solicitation. Although they’re not nearly as bad as the previous examples, solicitors can be quite the nuisance. With all of the information they have access to, they will be able to flood your phone, inbox and postal mailbox with offers of web/logo design or any online service knowing you have just registered a new domain name. There’s nothing more irritating than an array of soliciting phone calls at 8:30pm while winding down from a long day.
