    Domain Name Life Cycles

      Article summary

By all Registry policies, a registrant does not “own” a domain name but instead, the registrant holds a license to use a domain name, for a specified period of time and under certain terms and conditions. Below you will see examples of the Domain Life Cycle for various TLDs and the references for each term used. Some TLDs differ from the below, so please contact us if you would like to discuss further about domain name life cycles. Please use these images as guides only for a domain name life cycle as timings may differ.

      Domain Name Phases

      Domain Active

Phase when the domain name is registered and active.

      Domain Grace Period

The domain name has expired and the status of the domain name in our system is 'Expired'. The Registry will usually allow sufficient time after expiry for the domain name to be renewed before it moves to the next phase.

      Redemption Period

Some Registries allows Registrants to redeem & renew their domain name even when it's past the Renewal Grace Period. In this phase, the domain name will transition from Expired to Redemption state.

During Redemption Grace Period (RGP), the registry will prohibit a standard renewal or domain name transfers. The registrant may renew their domain in this state by paying the applicable Redemption fee set by each Registry. A domain name can be redeemed by filling out the following form matching your reseller currency:

      AUD: dreamscape_domain_redemption_au.pdf
      NZD: dreamscape_domain_redemption_nz.pdf
      USD: dreamscape_domain_redemption_us.pdf
      GBP: dreamscape_domain_redemption_uk.pdf
      INR: dreamscape_domain_redemption_in.pdf

      Black Out Period

Black Out Period works the same way with Redemption Period except that the domain is immediately released and will become available to the public once the period is over.

      Suspension

After the Renewal Grace Period, the domain name will become eligible for suspension. In this cycle, the domain name will transition from Expired to Suspended state. The domain name will be suspended for 60 calendar days and will no longer resolved on the internet, however, it can still be renewed as normal.

      Pending Delete

This is the last stage of a domain name before it is removed from the Registry and becomes available for public registration again. A domain name cannot be updated whatsoever in this state, which means it is not renewable, redeemable, or transferrable. For .au the domain name will automatically be listed on the domain drop list and become eligible for purge the day after the Renewal Grace Period ends.

Since a domain name cannot be renewed in this state, the only option is to register the domain name again once it becomes available for public registration. Registering 'dropped' domain names is a big business and domains can be bought quickly for the sole purpose to sell it back for profit. We recommend our back order service to try register domain names as soon as they're available.

Please note: If a domain name is manually deleted any time within the cycle, it will proceed immediately to Pending Delete status or get released to the public depending on what type of TLD and the age of the domain name.
